Has Give or Get Gotten up and Gone? Board expectations for 2024!
December 6, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
The expectation of board give/get policies is so widespread that many L.A. area funders ask for proof of give/get policies and outcomes. In this lively discussion, we will explore the value of give/get; its potentially adverse relationship to board diversity, equity, and inclusion; and the importance of speaking truth to power when it comes to old saws that can, at times, press against our missions. Finally, we will explore alternatives to give/get policies that support us in raising the funds we need to do our work without reinforcing the expectation of board member privilege and access to wealth.
After our meeting, join us for our Holiday Happy Hour to celebrate the coming Holidays.
Our Speaker: Mo Hyman
Mo is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of College Access Plan, which collaborates with the Pasadena and Hacienda La Puente school districts to ensure that every student, as well as their family members, has the strategic admissions and financial aid information and support they need to successfully graduate from college. Mo is also a consultant, working with school districts and nonprofit organizations on building cultures that prioritize systems change and equitable outcomes for youth, young adults, and their families. Finally, for 20 years Mo taught college level English, composition, fund development, and volunteer mobilization. She holds Master’s degrees from the University of New Mexico (English) and the University of Southern California (MPA in Nonprofit Management). Her dog, a pit bull/whippet mix named Maeby, is unbearably cute.
