Do Non-Profits Need a Security Plan? What Would That Look Like?
April 19, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am
Pre-schools, colleges, churches/temples, street festivals, concerts, charity events and administrative offices are not off limits to deadly attacks.
Although we may not be happy about it, security has become an essential component of non-profit organization operations. How do we protect children and adults we serve and our own employees?
Following the hostage situation at the Jewish synagogue in Texas in January 2022, and the shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo around the same time, the Jewish Federation realized that they needed to figure out a way to be safer. Over the course of the next several months, the local Jewish Federation worked with Secure Community Network (SCN, the official safety and security organization of the Jewish community in North America), to develop a comprehensive Community-wide Security Plan to be implemented within the Pasadena Jewish community. As they developed the plan, they looked at all aspects of security, including the need to hold trainings for community members and analyzing what they could do, by working with local law enforcement agencies, to better secure their local Jewish community institutions. Upon the plan’s completion, the Jewish Federation shared it with the local FBI office who was extremely impressed with the thoroughness of it and asked if they could use it as a model to share with other faith/ethnic communities.
At our April 15 meeting, PERT member Jason Moss, Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys’ Executive Director will share what went into developing the plan, how non-profit institutions can apply aspects of the plan to their overall organizational security efforts, and important initial steps that can be taken to get started.
Of course we hope your organization won’t need a plan….but what if you do? Join us on April 15!
